Union Berlin entered the annals of history as the first team in the German League (Bundesliga) to appoint a woman coach to the position of technical director, a step considered a landmark and unprecedented moment in the major European leagues.
The club announced the appointment of Marie-Louise Etta to temporarily lead the team, following the management’s decision to dismiss the previous technical staff as a result of deteriorating performance. Etta, who was part of the assistant technical staff, is considered one of Germany’s most promising coaching talents, having gained her experience working with junior teams before being selected for this difficult task in the first team.
This decision represents a shattering of traditional barriers in the world of men’s football, as the club places high hopes on Etta’s technical skills and leadership abilities to pull the team out of the spiral of negative results it is suffering from.
