Severe penalties imposed on Al-Ahly ignite controversy in the Egyptian League

Today, Saturday, the Egyptian Al-Ahly Club sent an official memorandum to both the Professional Clubs Association and the Grievances Committee of the Egyptian Football Association, demanding the cancellation of the recent sanctions imposed on the club, its players and its technical staff.

Last week, the Competitions Committee issued a series of sanctions against Al-Ahly against the backdrop of the events that accompanied its match against Ceramica Cleopatra in the Egyptian Professional League Championship.

After reviewing the events of the aforementioned match, the committee decided to suspend “Mohamed El-Shenawy,” Al-Ahly’s goalkeeper, for four matches and fine him 50,000 Egyptian pounds, for assaulting the match referee, “Mahmoud Wafa,” by pushing and holding him, in addition to a fine of 2,500 pounds due to his expulsion in the same match.

Walid Salah El-Din, director of football at Al-Ahly Club, was also suspended for one match due to his unsportsmanlike behavior and objection to the refereeing team, in addition to imposing a fine on Al-Ahly Club amounting to 20,000 Egyptian pounds.

Al-Ahly Club announced today, Saturday, that it had submitted to the Professional Clubs Association and the Grievances Committee on April 11, 2026, an official memorandum with the aim of canceling or reducing these penalties.

The club’s statement on its official website stated: “This Saturday morning, Al-Ahly Club submitted to both the Professional Clubs Association and the Grievances Committee of the Egyptian Football Association, with a letter of grievance against the decisions issued by the Competitions Committee, which stipulated the suspension of Captain Walid Salah El-Din, director of football, for one match, and the suspension of Mohamed El-Shenawy for four matches, and the imposition of a financial fine on the club worth 20 thousand pounds.”

Al-Ahly added in its statement that it requested the two parties in the grievance to cancel the aforementioned decisions “after the dispute with the match referee, Mahmoud Wafa, was established, and Al-Ahly and its players submitted a complaint against him to the Disciplinary Committee.”

Al-Ahly’s statement confirmed that the referee, “Mahmoud Wafa,” treated Al-Ahly players, “El-Shenawy,” “Trezeguet,” and “Hussein El-Shahat,” with inappropriate language and hand-pushing, describing this as a dangerous precedent in Egyptian stadiums.

It is noteworthy that Al-Ahly club occupies third place in the Egyptian Professional League standings with 41 points, and is preparing to face Smouha today, Saturday, in the second round of the title crowning stage. (Erm News)
