YouTube announces an increase in the cost of subscriptions in America

YouTube announced on Friday that it will raise subscription prices in the United States, and the new prices, which amount to a four-dollar increase, will begin to appear with the next billing cycle.

Alphabet’s video platform reported that the price of the individual YouTube Premium plan will rise from $13.99 to $15.99 per month, while the family plan will see a four-dollar increase to $26.99 per month.

As for the “YouTube Lite” subscription, it will be priced at $8.99 per month. The standalone YouTube Music Premium subscription has also increased by $1 to $11.99 per month.

These price changes are the first increase from YouTube in the United States in three years, and come years after the launch of “YouTube Premium,” which debuted in 2018 as an upgraded version of “YouTube Red,” which launched in 2015.

The moves follow a general trend of price increases across streaming platforms, with Spotify raising subscription prices in the US earlier this year, as well as Netflix, Disney+ and other platforms also raising fees in an attempt to offset rising costs for content and playback.

“This change allows us to maintain the features our members value: ad-free viewing, background play, and the massive library of over 300 million songs on YouTube Music,” a YouTube spokesperson said.

YouTube announced last year that its YouTube Premium and Music services combined exceeded 125 million subscribers globally, compared to 100 million in 2024.
