The President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, praised the joint statement issued by the United States and Iran regarding a fifteen-day ceasefire, and praised the efforts of all parties that contributed to reaching this agreement, especially the role played by Pakistan, Egypt and Turkey.
Aoun expressed his aspiration that this declaration would be the beginning of a comprehensive and final agreement that addresses the various issues that lead to destabilization in the region, in a way that preserves the sovereignty of each country in it, stressing that the use of violence is not the ideal solution to disputes between countries, and that the primary goal of governments and regimes must be to achieve the well-being of their people and ensure a free and dignified life for them, instead of pushing them to a free and senseless death.
He also stressed that the Lebanese state will continue its efforts in accordance with the principles agreed upon by all the Lebanese, which include the state’s full sovereignty over its lands, its liberation from any occupation, and limiting the right to war and peace and the use of legitimate force to the state’s constitutional institutions exclusively.
He stressed that this path represents the sole responsibility of the Lebanese state in any negotiations aimed at achieving “the general Lebanese interest.”
This position of the President of the Republic comes after the announcement of a “15-day ceasefire” between the United States and Iran, after weeks of an unprecedented military escalation that included an exchange of strikes and threats that targeted important installations and strategic corridors in the region, which raised fears of the expansion of the scope of the conflict.
