UNIFIL recovers its soldier and stresses ensuring the freedom of movement of its forces

UNIFIL reported that one of its peacekeeping soldiers was briefly detained by the Israeli army, after intercepting a mission supply convoy, but he was released within less than an hour after direct and urgent communications were made.

In a press statement, UNIFIL stated that this matter occurred earlier this evening, and indicated that the head of the mission and its commander-in-chief, in addition to the liaison unit, had made immediate communications that resulted in the rapid release of the peacekeeper.

The mission emphasized that “any detention of a United Nations peacekeeper is a flagrant violation of international law,” and further stressed that any interference in the missions of peacekeeping forces is considered a violation of Security Council Resolution 1701.

It also stated that it expects all parties to fully adhere to the protection enjoyed by UN peacekeepers, and to avoid any interference that hinders their movement in any way.

This development comes in the context of escalating tensions on the southern border, as UNIFIL plays a vital role in monitoring the ceasefire and implementing Resolution 1701 issued in 2006, which aims to end military operations and enhance the deployment of the Lebanese army in the south in coordination with international forces.

During times of escalation, the sensitivity of the movement of logistical convoys and field operations carried out by UNIFIL increases, which may sometimes place them at the heart of indirect friction between the conflicting parties. The United Nations constantly emphasizes the need to ensure the freedom of movement of its forces, as an essential part of its mandate.

This incident reaffirms the importance of field coordination and adherence to international rules regulating the work of peacekeeping missions, especially in light of the continuing security tensions in the southern region.
