An Israeli investigation into the Ain Saadeh tragedy and the dismissal of an official "My forces"

In a development that reflects the complex security situation in Lebanon, the Israeli army announced yesterday that it had carried out an operation targeting what it called a “terrorist target” in an area east of Beirut. The army confirmed that it is currently reviewing the information received regarding casualties among Lebanese civilians not participating in the hostilities, while stressing that “all details of the incident are under examination.”

In an attempt to justify this operation, the Israeli army accused Hezbollah of “continuing to position itself inside residential neighborhoods and using civilians as human shields,” considering that this represents a “flagrant violation of international law.”

This escalation comes amid the repercussions of the Ain Saadeh incident, which shocked Lebanese public opinion, as the targeting of a residential apartment in a civilian area led to the killing of the head of the Yahchush Center in the “Lebanese Forces”: Pierre Moawad and his wife. This incident caused great shock and raised sensitive questions about the nature of the objectives and standards of operations inside Lebanese territory.

Between the Israeli narrative that speaks of targeting individuals participating in the fighting, and the field reality that indicates civilian casualties, a dangerous equation is established in which the Lebanese find themselves trapped between two parallel dangers: the first is represented by the incursion of Hezbollah members and leaders into residential areas without any moral consideration, and the second is represented by Israeli military operations that appear not to adhere to clear controls separating military targets from civilian areas.

In sum, the scene appears bleak: strikes expanding deep inside Lebanon, unclear targets, and civilians paying the price in light of a security situation that is deteriorating day by day.
