The English Football Association has warned that the overcrowding of the match schedule represents a real danger to England’s future in the World Cup tournaments, and it also reduces the importance of the “FA Cup” tournament.
In its annual report for the 2024-2025 season, the FA stated: “One of the major challenges each season is achieving a balance between developing the global tournament schedule and the need to protect player safety. This task is further complicated by the ambitions of tournament owners to expand their events within an already crowded schedule. Ongoing discussions regarding future structural changes to the game, such as the introduction of new tournaments such as the Club World Cup, exacerbate this challenge.”
The report also noted: “These changes may significantly reduce the rest period available to elite professional players, impacting their recovery and general health. In addition, the introduction of more international competitions threatens to reduce the value of traditional domestic tournaments, such as the FA Cup, and may impact the performance of our national teams as a result of increased player fatigue and reduced team training time. These factors may have financial implications for us.”
