The Media and Communications Department of the Syrian Ministry of Defense reported that units of the Syrian Arab Army found a tunnel linking Syrian and Lebanese territories near the village of Housh al-Sayyid Ali, located west of Homs.
The administration stated that the tunnel was being used for smuggling operations by “Lebanese militias,” as it put it, pointing out that the specialized members of the army blocked the tunnel and took the necessary measures in the area surrounding it.
It should be noted that the border region between Syria and Lebanon, especially in the western Homs countryside, is witnessing increasing activity related to smuggling operations through illegal corridors, due to the rugged geographical nature of the long border between the two countries.
In recent years, the Syrian authorities have announced on several occasions the discovery of unofficial tunnels and crossings used to smuggle goods and individuals, as part of official efforts to increase security surveillance and control of the borders, in conjunction with security cooperation between the two sides in issues of combating smuggling and armed groups.
