Will Messi participate in the 2026 World Cup?

Lionel Scaloni, the coach of the Argentine national team, explained that Lionel Messi’s participation in the 2026 World Cup depends on his personal decision, stressing his strong desire to be present in the tournament, and that he will do his utmost to achieve that.

In statements he made during a press conference on the eve of the friendly match with Mauritania, Scaloni stated that this question should be directed to Messi himself, expressing his belief that his presence in the World Cup will be a great addition to football, given the player’s popularity and the desire of international fans to follow him, and not just Argentine fans.

He stressed that the final decision depends on the extent of Messi’s mental and physical readiness, pointing out that the national team does not impose any pressure on him, and that the Argentine star has earned the right to make his decision carefully, and any choice he makes will be the best for him and the team.

Last October, Messi said in an interview with NBC News that participating in the next World Cup represents an exceptional dream for him, but he also indicated that his advanced age plays a role in this decision.

He added that he hopes to participate in the tournament at his peak, and to be able to support the Argentine national team, explaining that he will monitor his condition on a daily basis as he begins his preparations for the new season with Inter Miami, before making his final decision.

It is noteworthy that the Argentine national team is looking forward to maintaining the title it won in the Qatar 2022 World Cup at the expense of France, noting that it will begin its campaign in the 2026 edition by facing Algeria on next June 16.
