Will Trump be banned from attending major sporting events?

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is studying a controversial proposal that aims to prevent US President Donald Trump and US government officials from attending major international sporting events, including those held within the United States such as the 2026 World Cup, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and the 2034 Utah Winter Olympics.

This escalatory measure comes in the context of an ongoing dispute that arose as a result of the US government’s refusal to pay its annual contributions to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), which amounted to $7.3 million for the years 2024 and 2025, in protest against the agency’s handling of international doping issues, most notably the acquittal of Chinese swimmers proven to have used banned substances.

WADA derives its powers from agreements with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), obligating governments to pay fees and adhere to regulatory rules as a condition for participation in the Olympic Movement.

Although World Anti-Doping Agency spokesman James Fitzgerald confirmed that the rules will not be applied retroactively to upcoming tournaments in America, the draft proposal obtained by the Associated Press does not include an explicit text guaranteeing this exception.

On the political level, this trend sparked widespread dissatisfaction in Washington, where the Republican and Democratic parties united in criticizing WADA. American officials described this step as ridiculous and illogical, stressing that controlling the movements of the head of state within his country and ensuring the security of the sports infrastructure is the sovereign responsibility of the government and not the jurisdiction of a sports organization.

Analysts believe that this move is the latest in a series of mutual threats, and Senator Marsha Blackburn considers it further evidence of the correctness of the decision to freeze funding to demand greater transparency and accountability within the international organization.
