A Sunni mediator intervenes in the Roumieh case... unexpected calm and postponement of the sit-in!

Against the backdrop of the tensions witnessed in Roumieh Prison, MP Ahmed Al-Khair intervened as a mediator in an attempt to calm the situation. His efforts resulted in stopping the protest carried out by the prisoners of Building B.

The Prisoners’ Families Committee in Lebanon reported in a statement that this intervention came in response to a number of prisoners’ contact with MP Al-Khair, who in turn confirmed his endeavor with a number of his fellow MPs to find radical solutions to the prison crisis in Lebanon, including all prisoners, regardless of their nationalities and affiliations.

The statement explained that the proposed initiative aims to push for the adoption of a general amnesty law, in addition to working to reduce the length of one year in prison. He pointed out that the concerned representatives are making extensive contacts and visiting various political leaders to achieve this goal.

Based on Representative Al-Khair’s call for the prisoners to suspend their protest and give the initiative a chance, a meeting was held inside the prison in the presence of the sheikhs and youth of the building, where it was agreed to stop the protest movement and allow room for the ongoing efforts.

The Prisoners’ Families Committee thanked the administration of Roumieh Prison, headed by the company commander, Colonel Nazih Salah, for their cooperation and understanding of the prisoners’ demands and their efforts to transfer them to the competent authorities, which contributed to reducing tension inside the prison.

This initiative is considered a real test of the seriousness of the political treatment of the prison issue in Lebanon, in light of the continuing demands to find long-term humanitarian and legal solutions.
