Samsung is considering the possibility of ending sales of its innovative phone, the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, shortly after its launch, despite the great demand it witnessed from consumers.
The company had begun selling the phone first in South Korea before the end of 2025, and then expanded its availability to include other limited markets, such as the United States, China, Taiwan, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates.
High demand and limited supplies
Despite the widespread interest the device received, available information indicates that Samsung manufactured very small quantities of it. In South Korea, the number of devices available at launch did not exceed between 3 and 4 thousand units, while the quantities allocated to global markets were estimated at only about 20 to 30 thousand units.
For comparison, the company has received more than 1 million pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7.
Reports stated that the available quantities of the tri-fold phone were running out within a few minutes of being displayed on the Samsung website, until the matter reached the point of reselling the device online at prices nearly three times its original price.
Why is Samsung considering stopping selling it?
Contrary to popular belief, the reason is not due to weak turnout, but rather to two main factors, according to informed sources:
The first reason is that the device was designed primarily to demonstrate the company’s technical capabilities, and not necessarily as a product aimed at achieving direct profits.
The second reason is the high production costs, especially the prices of components such as DRAM, chips, and NAND memory, which makes achieving a profit margin from the phone difficult.
Possibility of stopping in other markets
Reports indicate that the decision to stop sales may include markets other than South Korea, as sales are expected to stop in countries such as the United States once the currently available quantities run out.
Strong competition in the foldable phone market
This phone comes after Huawei unveiled the world’s first tri-folding phone called the Huawei Mate XT in 2024, which led to the ignition of competition in the field of foldable phones.
On the other hand, Samsung is preparing to launch a new generation of its phones, including the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, in addition to a foldable device with a wider design.
Although there is no confirmed information yet about the release of a new version of TriFold, the high demand for the first version may encourage the company to repeat the experience in the future. (Arabic)
