Lebanon: A total power outage due to thunderstorms

The Electricité du Liban announced that around one o’clock in the afternoon (13:00), and due to bad weather conditions accompanied by frequent thunderstorms and lightning, there was an automatic and sudden disconnection of the two primary high-voltage 66 kV lines, which led to a steady increase in the frequency level (Over Frequency) on the electrical network, and this caused the disconnection of all production units from the network.

The corporation explained that avoiding such general outages remains difficult in the absence of a sufficient reserve of production capacity, as network stability requires the availability of production capacities of no less than 1,000 megawatts as a minimum. She also indicated that managing, operating and monitoring the network with the required efficiency without the National Control Center (NCC), which was completely destroyed in the Beirut Port explosion on August 4, 2020, represents a major challenge.

Accordingly, the organization’s technical teams are constantly working to monitor the situation and gradually reconnect the production units to the transportation network in accordance with the approved technical procedures to return things to normal. The Electricité du Liban confirms once again the continued provision of electricity, and emphasizes that it continues to evaluate the situation periodically and takes the necessary measures at the operational and technical levels to adapt to the current challenges, most notably the negative impact of the collection process in light of the rise in global oil prices, in order to overcome this difficult stage.

Finally, the Electricité du Liban will keep all citizens informed of any developments related to securing electricity, through subsequent statements in this regard.
