In the midst of the dangerous escalation taking place in the region, and with growing concern about the conflict spreading to include the entire region, Prime Minister Nawaf Salam once again stressed the importance of keeping Lebanon safe from any possible deterioration of the situation.
Through his account on the “X” platform, Salam wrote: “In the face of the dangerous developments the region is witnessing, I once again appeal to all Lebanese to be wise and patriotic, putting the interests of Lebanon and the Lebanese above any account.” He added, “I repeat that we will not accept that anyone engages the country in adventures that threaten its security and unity.”
This position of the Prime Minister comes after a major military escalation that began with Israel’s announcement of a pre-emptive strike inside Iran, followed by the bombing of numerous targets described as official, missile, and security, in conjunction with the declaration of a state of emergency in Israel, the call-up of reserve forces, and the strengthening of the military presence on the borders with Lebanon and the West Bank.
On the other hand, Tehran announced its readiness to respond, and temporarily closed its airspace, while reports reported that explosions had occurred in several Iranian cities and raised the level of preparedness in health and security institutions. US military reinforcements have also been observed in the region over the past few days, raising growing concerns about the possibility of the conflict expanding to other fronts, including the Lebanese front.
Under these circumstances, fears are exacerbated of a regional slide that could put Lebanon at the heart of direct repercussions, which justifies the Prime Minister’s call to prioritize the national interest and avoid any steps that might threaten the country’s security and unity.
