Yesterday, Thursday, Dario Amodei, CEO of the artificial intelligence company Anthropic, said that his company “cannot in good conscience agree” to the Pentagon’s requests to allow the expansion of the use of its technologies.

The company that produces the “Cloud” chatbot explained in a statement that it had not withdrawn from the ongoing negotiations, but noted that the new version of the contract it received from the Ministry of Defense “made almost no progress in preventing the use of Cloud for mass surveillance of Americans or in fully autonomous weapons.”

A Pentagon spokesperson reiterated the military’s desire to use the AI technology developed by Anthropic in ways that comply with the law, while emphasizing that the company would not be allowed to impose any restrictions before a Friday deadline to agree to their demands.

It should be noted that Anthropic’s policies prohibit the use of its models, including the “Cloud” chatbot, for these purposes.
