The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, MP Gebran Bassil, expressed his opinion regarding the Constitutional Council’s decision to abolish the law regulating the judicial judiciary, considering that this matter further demonstrates the extent of the failure of the government and the political system to achieve true independence of the judiciary.
Bassil wrote on his account on the “X” platform: “Congratulations to the Judges Club and the Saudi judges for the complete invalidation of the Judicial Independence Law by the Constitutional Council after the appeal that we submitted. This is further evidence of the inability of the government and the system to take an actual measure for the independence of judges.”
He continued, saying: “You are truly independent, but you need a law to protect you,” and he ended his speech with the phrase: “God willing, they will not repeat the crime against justice.”
Basil’s comment comes after the Constitutional Council issued a decision to completely invalidate the law regulating the judicial judiciary, due to its violation of basic procedures, which include not taking the opinion of the Supreme Judicial Council. This decision returned the issue of judicial independence to the circle of political and judicial debate, and once again opened the way for legislative discussions about the legal form necessary to protect judges and enhance the independence of the judiciary.
