FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed, on Tuesday, his lack of concern about Mexico hosting part of the 2026 World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, despite the violent events that the country witnessed following the killing of a senior drug gang leader.

In an interview conducted by Infantino with the French Press Agency from the Colombian city of Barranquilla, he stated that he was “very calm,” believing that things were going well and that the tournament would be “wonderful.”

These are his first statements since the outbreak of violence on Sunday in several Mexican regions, including the city of Guadalajara, which will host four matches in the 2026 World Cup.

For her part, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that her country provides “full guarantees” for the safety of fans, stressing that there is no danger to the fans who will attend the matches in June, and that the authorities have taken all necessary measures.

These assurances came after a wave of violence that broke out following the killing of drug lord “El Mencho” in a military operation near Guadalajara, followed by clashes and road closures in a number of states.

It is noteworthy that Guadalajara, along with Monterrey, will host playoff matches for the tournament in late March. (Sky News)
