A team from DM Performance in the United Kingdom was able to radically modify the Renault Twizy small city car, which stopped production in 2023, to transform it into a high-performance electric vehicle. The team replaced the original engine with a “Stark Varg” engine, which is one of the most powerful electric motorcycle engines in the world.
The original Twizy was a compact car designed specifically for urban commuting. It produced just 17 horsepower, weighed about 450 kg, and had a top speed of between 48 and 80 km/h, making it more of an enclosed scooter.
Transform Twizy into an electric monster
The Stark Varg engine produces nearly 80 horsepower and 692 lb-ft of torque, which exceeds “the performance of luxury sports cars like the Lamborghini Aventador.” To achieve this feat, the team completely disassembled the Twizy, removed the original engine, then installed the new engine with a custom drivetrain and chain drive instead of direct drive. In addition, the rear differential has been modified with a stainless steel cover and high-pressure oil to handle the massive torque.
The team also replaced the original Twizy’s 100kg battery with a lighter 32kg Stark Varg battery, which delivers more power and faster discharge, and fitted a ‘Maxpeedingrods’ suspension system to reduce the risk of tipping over.
Amazing performance and fun challenges
The torque of the revised Twizy is now higher than that of the Lamborghini Aventador (509 lb-ft), and in an acceleration test up to 161 km/h, it outperformed the Audi S1 Quattro due to its significantly lighter weight. It also implemented “high-speed donuts around the Aventador,” demonstrating the tremendous torque potential in a light chassis.
The end result is not just a faster car, but an exciting and fun experience that shows how even the smallest electric city cars can be turned into a mad science project for performance enthusiasts.
