As February 28 approaches, the issue of old residential rents returns to raise widespread controversy on both the legal and social levels. Questions are rising about how the law is implemented and the parties’ commitment to the specified time frames.

In this context, the head of the Committee for Defending Tenants’ Rights, Castro Abdullah, stated in an interview with, “Law No. 2/2017 is still not actually implemented, based on Article 58 of it, which links its implementation to the establishment of the support fund and the relevant committees and putting them into actual implementation.”

The absence of the fund and committees hinders the implementation of the law:

Abdullah explained that “failing to complete these conditions legally makes any attempt to enforce the law a clear violation of the text itself, and an infringement on the rights of tenants.” He pointed out that the absence of the fund and committees practically leads to the disruption of the specified time limits, making the law suspended until further notice.

Registering tenants to guarantee their rights:

Abdullah stressed that “the committee did what was available within its powers, as the names were registered in the fund, and the property owners were informed that the tenants would remain in their locations.” Until 2029 initially“With reservations about any possible amendment or change in the law, which has become inevitable under the existing circumstances.”

The need for serious legislative treatment:

He also pointed out that “the previous period witnessed delays in completing the procedures, and even a deterioration of the situation, which requires serious legislative treatment that enables the law to be implemented correctly, away from statements, intimidation, or the exchange of warnings that are not based on clear mechanisms, and which have not previously yielded practical solutions.”

Abdullah appealed to all tenants who have not yet registered to quickly complete this process with the Fund. He also urged anyone who receives any warning or notice to contact the Tenants’ Rights Defense Committee to follow up on the matter legally in the appropriate manner.

Abdullah concluded his speech by saying, “The next stage will witness immediate movements, including escalatory steps before the House of Representatives, to demand amending the law in a way that preserves the rights of tenants and ensures a fair and equitable treatment of this file.”
