Representatives in the British Parliament called for a ban on Brazilian butt augmentation (BBL) surgeries in the United Kingdom, following the issuance of a report that highlighted the lack of oversight in the cosmetic sector, which led to these surgeries being performed in unsafe places such as basements, hotel rooms, and even public toilets.

The Women and Equality Commission (WEC) stressed the need to immediately ban high-risk procedures such as non-surgical injections to enlarge the buttocks, which have led to the death of some patients, while demanding the establishment of a strict licensing system for less risky procedures, ensuring that they are restricted to those qualified only, according to what the British newspaper “The Guardian” reported.

The nine-month investigation revealed that some individuals practiced these operations without any formal training, which poses a threat to the lives of the public.

Deaths and serious injuries were also noted, including the death of Alice Webb, 33, following a BBL operation in September 2024, and Sasha Dean suffering complications that required her to be admitted to the intensive care unit for five weeks.

The committee warned that the spread of these dangerous procedures is linked to social media pressure and the influence of influencers who “legitimize” high-risk cosmetic surgeries, increasing the possibility of individuals suffering serious injuries.

On the other hand, the British Ministry of Health stated that it would review the report and provide a response in the near future, stressing its endeavor “to ensure that only qualified specialists are able to perform high-risk operations and protect patients from serious risks.”
