Arturo Gonzalo, President of Enagaz, the company that operates the gas network in Spain, expects a decline in demand for gas in the country by 2026 by approximately 7%, as the impact of the massive power outage that occurred on April 28, 2025 subsides.

In the context of a press conference that followed the announcement of the company’s results for the year 2025, Gonzalo stated that the major outage that Spain and Portugal witnessed last year prompted the electricity network operator to rely more on gas stations to generate electricity, which led to an increase in demand for gas by nearly a third during the past year.

Total demand for gas, including exports to countries such as France, reached 372 terawatt-hours in 2025, recording an increase of 7.4% compared to the previous year. Demand this year is expected to decline to about 345 terawatt-hours, a level close to demand in 2024.

Spanish gas exports to France also witnessed an increase of 59% in 2025, due to the filling of underground storage facilities in France, while overall gas exports recorded an increase of 17%.

Gonzalo pointed out that there are currently about 2,100 berths for LNG unloading ships, and that the goal is to reach an additional 1,000 loading berths by 2040, stressing that these numbers embody the strength and flexibility of the Spanish gas system.
