Researchers from Russia’s Sechenov University revealed that one in six people around the world suffers from infertility, explaining that this problem affects 17.6% of the world’s population.
## Increasing cases of infertility
Dmitry Korolyov, a urologist and andrologist and assistant professor at the Institute of Urology and Human Reproductive Health at Sechenov University in Russia, stated:
* “According to the latest data, 17.6% of the world’s population is considered infertile, meaning that 1 in 6 people, men or women, suffer from infertility.”
* “As for men’s contribution to the reproductive process, I would say that their percentage reaches 50%.”
He added that common causes of infertility in men include genetic defects, varicocele, obesity, and associated diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
## Tips for men to undergo examinations
Dmitry Korolyov advised men over the age of forty to conduct tests for testosterone levels, blood sugar levels, and thyroid hormones, with the aim of monitoring their reproductive health.
“First, the level of testosterone, specifically total free testosterone, should be checked,” he explained.
He continued: “As well as the level of glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin, which can directly affect the condition of the penile vessels and erection. Doctors also recommend checking thyroid hormones and tumor indicators.”
He concluded by saying: “In addition to the aforementioned tests, men should undergo a digital rectal examination with a urologist, as this examination allows the diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate cancer with a high degree of accuracy.”
