“Blink of an Eye” saved a 10-year-old Brazilian girl from the grip of her father, who was suspected of kidnapping her, for 18 days, following the careful intervention of a policeman who captured a silent look of help from her eyes, which revealed a kidnapping crime accompanied by death threats and harsh conditions that included sleeping on the street.
The details of the incident began on October 7, during a regular security patrol in the city of Praia Grande in the state of São Paulo, when policeman Wilianz Alves Diaz noticed a man walking holding the hand of a girl. Despite the apparent nature of the scene, the girl’s look aroused his doubts and prompted him to return to her, explaining that it took a thousandth of a second for him to feel that something abnormal was happening.
When he approached and noticed signs of tension on the father, the policeman approached the child cautiously, asking her to blink her eyes if she was in danger, which the little girl responded to. An examination of the man’s identity resulted in the discovery that he was her father, and that he had an arrest warrant on suspicion of kidnapping her. The father tried to flee before police officers succeeded in arresting him near the beach. In a touching moment, the child approached the policeman, apologizing and begging him not to leave her alone, so he promised to return her to her mother.
Investigations showed that the child had disappeared since September 20, after her father – according to the mother’s testimony – drugged them inside a hotel in the city of Baruiri, before fleeing with his daughter and her personal documents. During the kidnapping period, the father moved between several places, forcing his daughter to sleep in the street, while sending threatening letters to the mother, one of which threatened that the police would only find her daughter’s body. On September 28, the judiciary issued a decision to search for the child and return her, granting the mother exclusive custody while depriving the father of the right to visitation.
The child received the necessary medical care after her rescue, and was temporarily placed under the supervision of child protection services before being reunited with her mother, while the 37-year-old father was detained awaiting trial on charges expected to include kidnapping, illegal detention, domestic violence, assault, and theft.
At the conclusion of the story, the little girl returned with her mother to the military police headquarters in São Paulo, carrying a basket of sweets and a letter to Officer Diaz, in which he wrote: “You were the only person who understood me. I tried to attract the attention of many people, but you were different. You noticed my desperate look.”
For his part, Police Officer Diaz confirmed that he would keep the message in a frame, refusing to describe him as a hero, considering himself an ordinary person and a father who wanted to help, and pointing out that the child was the one who, in her view, chose him to be a tool to save her.
