The Minister of Finance, Yassin Jaber, stressed the need to expedite the completion of the decrees and implementation procedures for the retirement and social protection system, and to provide the necessary administrative, financial and technical conditions to put it into effect. During his sponsorship of the launch of Mr. Sadiq Alawiya’s book “The New Retirement System in Social Security – Social Protection,” he stressed that the adoption of the law in December 2023 addressed a fundamental deficiency in the social protection system, considering that “the worker who is waiting for his retirement pension does not measure achievement by the number of meetings, but by the amount of security that enters his life.”
Jaber pointed out that the Lebanese crisis revealed the fragility of security based on compensation that is received once and whose value is eroded, stressing the importance of the retirement pension as a periodic income that preserves human dignity and independence. He explained that anyone who has spent his life productively has the right to reach retirement reassured about his future, pointing out that social protection constitutes a real test of social justice and contributes to alleviating the burdens on families and supporting their stability.
In a related context, the Minister of Finance stressed the need to protect sources of funding for social rights through accurate financial estimates, effective collection of contributions, transparent management of funds, serious oversight, and disciplined investment that puts the interests of those guaranteed at the forefront. Linking maintaining the actual value of pensions to achieving monetary and financial stability and building a system that combines pension adequacy and financing sustainability.
Jaber touched on the burdens accumulated as a result of the financial and economic crisis, which were exacerbated by the Israeli aggression, destruction and displacement, stressing that this reality doubles the state’s responsibility in managing resources and setting priorities. He pointed out that the reform path and cooperation with international institutions and the International Monetary Fund must reflect positively on the lives of the Lebanese people and their ability to live in dignity.
Jaber concluded by calling for regular political and institutional work and providing a national consensus that protects the issues of retirement and security from conflicts, stressing that “the best appreciation for the efforts made to approve the new system is to complete the remaining steps to implement it. It is the right of those who spent their lives building this nation to find security in it when they retire.”
