The Yemeni government intensifies its diplomatic efforts and demands an end to the flow of weapons to the Houthis

The Yemeni government has intensified its diplomatic efforts to respond to the recent military escalation by the Houthi group, calling on the UN Security Council to explicitly condemn the attacks targeting government and service facilities, residential neighborhoods, and civilian objects, and to take actual steps to hold those responsible accountable, amid warnings of their dangerous repercussions on the country’s security and stability.

This position came in two official letters sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs, on Sunday, to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and the President of the Security Council for the current month. The two letters addressed the Houthi group’s ongoing violations, most notably the attack that targeted the Ma’ashiq presidential palace in the temporary capital, Aden.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the attack, which was carried out with missiles and drones on October 15, led to the death of 5 security personnel and the injury of 16 others, considering that targeting the presidential and government headquarters represents a dangerous escalation that threatens civil peace and security stability in Yemen.

The two letters pointed out that the Houthi attacks have extended to include residential neighborhoods and gatherings of displaced people in Ma’rib Governorate, in addition to attacks that targeted civilians and populated areas in the Taiz and Lahj governorates, in addition to the repeated attacks that targeted Aden International Airport.

The Yemeni government warned of the catastrophic repercussions of the continuation of these attacks on the safety of civilians and regional security, renewing its call on the international community, especially the Security Council, to take a firm and clear stance regarding them.

In a related context, the government called for the full implementation of Security Council Resolutions 2140 and 2216, demanding that practical and urgent measures be taken to prevent the flow of weapons, missiles, drones and their components to the Houthi group. It also stressed the importance of strengthening cooperation frameworks with the legitimate government in the areas of information exchange, technical assistance, and capacity building.

This international move reflects the Yemeni government’s endeavor to move the issue from the traditional circle of political condemnation to demands for a practical position from the Security Council, aiming to limit the flow of weapons, strengthen official capabilities to confront attacks and protect vital installations and civilians.
