Who is Mujtaba Haqq, the new rising face in the Quds Force?

The commander of the “Quds Force” of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Ismail Qaani, made new appointments, including Mojtaba Haqq assuming the leadership of “Unit 840,” whose name was officially changed to “Unit 600,” according to what the opposition website “Iran International” reported from sources close to the Corps.

This appointment comes to fill the ongoing leadership vacuum since the killing of the former commander of the unit, Yazdan Mir (known as “Hajj Asghar Bagheri”), in an Israeli attack that targeted him on April 6. The new commander, Haq Lasan, is 64 years old and previously held the position of head of the intelligence department in the unit.

In the same organizational context, the Revolutionary Guard changed the name of “Unit 840” to “Unit 600,” after its organizational structure and the names of its leaders were exposed to public opinion, according to the same sources.

The unit’s new leadership structure showed the appointment of Muhammad Reza Ansari as deputy to Haq Lasan and responsible for the Israel file, while Mohsen Boroujni took over the head of the Special Operations Department in the United States and Europe. The appointments also included Morteza Babaei assuming the presidency of the Special Operations Department in the Middle East and Africa, and Javad Sharafaei managing the Special Operations Department in Asia.

At the operational level, the tasks of carrying out attacks in Africa and India were assigned to Maytham Sahraei, while Gholam Hossein Hosseini and Mohammad Hossein Pour will be responsible for implementing field activities.

Sources close to the “Quds Force” indicated that relying on figures who held previous positions within the unit reflects a severe leadership crisis that the Revolutionary Guard is suffering from in the wake of the series of assassinations that targeted its senior commanders, in addition to raising a state of doubt among the members of the Corps regarding the efficiency and effectiveness of the security apparatus.
