Iran is arming the Houthis with advanced Chinese naval tactics and technology

Recent data showed that the Houthi group adopted a complex path to develop its military arsenal and build advanced local capabilities, which reduced its dependence on external supplies and increased the challenges facing air defense systems in the region.

According to a report by Reuters, Iran has been providing support and training to the Houthis for more than a decade, despite Tehran’s official denial of this. Specialists reported that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and the Lebanese Hezbollah transferred initial knowledge, before local Yemeni cadres succeeded in developing this expertise and transforming it into institutional manufacturing capabilities. Analysts described this strategy as being based on “teaching hunting” instead of simply providing the group with equipment, which ensures the continuation of local production even if direct supplies are interrupted or confiscated.

Houthi supply chains are not limited to the Iranian side; The group also relies on dual-use Chinese components used in the manufacture of medium-range ballistic missiles, while Tehran provides complex components that are difficult to obtain from alternative sources.

In a qualitative development, the report indicated that the Houthis used artificial intelligence techniques to develop guidance software and help design hypersonic missiles, some of which have a range of more than two thousand kilometers.

In terms of field repercussions, the air defense systems of Washington’s allies in the region are facing increasing pressure as a result of the high consumption of interceptor missiles designated to protect bases and partners. Specialists believe that the vast geographical area of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia makes the task of securing its entire territory with air defenses extremely complex, compared to countries with smaller areas such as Israel, or the Ukrainian theater of operations.

The report concluded that the Houthis benefited extensively from the operational experience accumulated during the years of war in Yemen, as well as the regional escalation related to the Gaza war and the attacks in the Red Sea, which, in addition to diversifying supply chains, contributed to strengthening their military capabilities and continuing to develop their arsenal.
