29 countries, including the United States, Britain, France, and Germany, escalated their diplomatic and security stance towards Tehran, declaring in a joint statement their strong condemnation of what they described as “hostile activities” attributed to Iran outside their borders, and pledging to pursue those responsible.
The signatory countries expressed their condemnation “in the strongest terms” of Iran’s resort to violent attacks, including planning lethal operations, arson, sabotage, and cyberattacks, targeting it and its partners.
The statement announced the support of the assembled countries for the British assessment regarding the security incident that targeted the Fairford Air Base of the British Royal Air Force on September 27. The British government had summoned the Iranian ambassador in connection with the incident to express its dissatisfaction with Tehran’s continued attempts to undermine the security of the United Kingdom and international partners.
In the same context, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated before the House of Commons on Monday that the British assessment is highly likely that the security incident at the base – used by the United States – was coordinated in Iran and took place “almost certainly under the direction of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard,” stressing by saying: “We will not tolerate these threats on our lands.”
The joint statement indicated that investigations concluded that the “Fairford” incident reflects the continued willingness of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to expand its cross-border activities through secret networks and proxy parties. This comes as an extension of a series of attacks across Europe targeting Jewish communities, Iranian journalists, and American interests, which the statement attributed to the “People of the Islamic Right” (HAYI) movement.
The 29 countries stressed that any Iranian attempt to threaten, silence, intimidate, harass, harm, or coerce people on its territory – whether through proxies or other means – is “unacceptable.”
The countries concluded their statement by pledging to take all necessary measures to identify those responsible for activities carried out on behalf of Iran or any other country, investigate them, thwart them, and prosecute their perpetrators, as well as strengthen international coordination to protect their sovereignty and societies.
