Targeting a UNIFIL site with bullets raises fears of a war crime

This Wednesday morning, a site belonging to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), near the town of Kfar Shuba in the eastern sector of the Blue Line, was exposed to small arms fire, resulting in material damage to parts of the site and UN property, without any human casualties among the peacekeeping forces.

UNIFIL explained, in a statement issued today, that its members stationed at the site rushed to take cover immediately after the shooting began, noting that the casualties were concentrated in the outer wall, while other bullets hit residential units, vehicles, and buildings inside the base.

The mission described the targeting of a clearly marked site as “unacceptable,” warning that these deliberate attacks put the lives of peacekeepers in grave danger. It announced the opening of a comprehensive investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident and the party responsible for it, despite not specifying the source of the fire in its statement.

UNIFIL reminded all parties of the need to adhere to international laws to ensure the safety and security of United Nations personnel and property, stressing that any attack on its forces constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law and UN Resolution 1701, and may amount to a war crime.

It is noteworthy that this incident comes amid ongoing tension witnessed by the Blue Line and the border areas in southern Lebanon, at a time when UNIFIL continues to perform its field tasks based on its mandate granted under Resolution 1701.
