Hour of truth in Tripoli: Rifi proposes a radical solution to the waste crisis

Official meetings continue to search for alternatives to the worsening waste crisis in Tripoli, after the current landfill has reached its maximum capacity and stopped receiving more waste, in parallel with efforts to find a temporary site and restart the sorting plant of the Federation of Al-Fayhaa Municipalities to achieve sustainable treatment of the file.

In this context, MP Ashraf Rifi entered the crisis line, saying via the “X” platform that the situation in Tripoli had exceeded all limits of possibility, criticizing the concerned parties’ shifting responsibilities and shifting the problem, stressing that “Tripoli cannot tolerate an additional day of waste in its streets, and Akkar should not be turned into an open dump without securing the elements for health and environmental treatment.”

Rifi confirmed that a sustainable solution is available, pointing out that the Sarar landfill could form an essential part of it, especially after its owners agree to receive the waste, provided that a sanitary landfill and a waste sorting plant are secured, in addition to the state asphalt and rehabilitating the roads leading to it. He described these demands as “legitimate and logical” and represent the minimum to protect the environment and health of the people of Akkar, who have borne the burden of waste for years.

The representative pointed out that the cost of implementing these infrastructures and projects is incomparable to the exorbitant ones resulting from the continued accumulation of waste in the streets of Tripoli and Akkar, and the subsequent health, environmental and social repercussions borne by the population.

Rifi concluded by calling on the Prime Minister and members of the government to give this file an urgent national priority, demanding that binding decisions be taken during the cabinet session scheduled for tomorrow, with a clear timetable for their implementation, stressing that what is currently required is “a decision, implementation and a sustainable solution.”
