Fairford investigations expand: arrest of a British citizen and suspicions of Iranian involvement

British police announced today, Tuesday, the arrest of a 22-year-old British man in the capital, London, on suspicion of involvement in preparing terrorist acts, as part of expanded investigations led by counter-terrorism services into a plot that targeted the “Fairford” base of the British Royal Air Force.

In the same context, Western media reported the arrest of an Iranian citizen in connection with the same case, bringing the number of detainees to seven people, after five men were arrested earlier last week near the base located in southwest England, on suspicion of planning to carry out terrorist attacks.

The roots of the case go back to last September 27, after the police received a report stating that “suspicious” activity had been monitored by a group of people and a number of small trucks near the military facility, which prompted the authorities to evacuate 85 homes in the vicinity of the base as a precautionary measure.

Against the backdrop of these security developments, the United States withdrew all 12 of its B-1 bombers that were stationed at the base, in a move that American officials attributed to growing security concerns about possible plans to target the facility.

The “Fairford” base has extreme security sensitivity and strict procedures, due to its use by the American forces as a center for launching air operations linked to Iran, which explains the widespread security alert and the expansion of the circle of investigations to uncover the circumstances of the potential threats and the parties involved.
