Recent technical documents revealed that Sony is preparing to develop two new portable devices from the “PlayStation” family, amid speculation that they will be two upgraded versions of the “PlayStation Portal” device that the company launched in 2023.
A report published by “The Verge” technical platform stated that the new devices appeared in documents submitted by “Sony” to obtain certification certificates for connecting to Wi-Fi networks, as they bear the symbols “CFI-Y2015” and “Y2000”, and the data shows that they are certified to the “Android 15” operating system.
Although the operational nature of the two devices has not been officially announced, the report suggests that they will be allocated for broadcasting games remotely – similar to “PlayStation Portal” – instead of operating them independently, indicating that the documents indicate the use of “Wi-Fi 5” technology instead of the latest version, “Wi-Fi 6”, and the company’s possible move towards streaming devices is due to the high costs of processors and memory units.
In a related context, technical reports indicated the possibility of postponing the launch of the PlayStation 6 platform to the year 2028 or later, after previous expectations indicated the year 2027, against the backdrop of the memory crisis and high production costs.
In the same context, a report issued by the “TakeTown” website suggested that the price of the upcoming generation of gaming consoles would exceed the $1,000 mark, in light of the ongoing wave of high prices witnessed in the electronic device markets.
So far, Sony has not issued any official announcement specifying the launch dates for the two new portable devices, or revealing the final specifications of the PlayStation 6 platform.
