Securing phone data before maintenance...necessary steps to avoid privacy leakage

The smartphone contains a huge amount of photos, messages, accounts, and sensitive personal data, which makes handing it over to maintenance centers a step that requires strict preventive measures to protect privacy and prevent any unwanted access to the content.

The most important security measures begin with creating a full backup of data and ensuring its success in case the contents of the device may be erased during the repair process. Some companies, such as Samsung and Google, provide a “maintenance mode” or “repair mode” feature, which enables the technician to examine the device and perform the necessary maintenance while maintaining the confidentiality of photos, messages, and personal files.

In the same context, it is stressed that it is necessary not to disclose the screen lock code or account passwords to the technician, and that the SIM card and external memory card (SD) must be removed, in addition to reviewing the credit cards and digital payment methods stored on the device before handing it over.

If the device does not have a dedicated maintenance mode, it is suggested to perform a factory reset after ensuring that a reliable backup copy is saved, especially if the phone will be subject to maintenance for a long period.

After receiving the device from the maintenance center, it is recommended to conduct a comprehensive review of accounts, applications, and security settings to ensure that there are no unexpected changes, in addition to reactivating security features that may have been disabled before submitting the phone for repair.
