On Friday, October 2, 2026, the Israeli army and the Shin Bet General Security Service announced the assassination of Ibrahim Mustafa Suleiman Abu Awaimer, who is considered the leader of an elite platoon in the military wing of the Hamas movement, after he was targeted by an air strike in the Nuseirat area in the central Gaza Strip.
The Israeli army spokeswoman, Ella Wawiyeh, explained in a post on the “X” platform that Abu Awaimer participated in the storming of Israeli territory during the October 7 attack.
The army claimed that the targeted leader had recently worked to advance plans targeting his forces and Israeli citizens, in addition to his efforts to rebuild the capabilities of the Hamas movement, considering that these activities constitute a systematic violation of the ceasefire agreement, and justified the air operation by the necessity of “removing the threat he posed.”
In the same context, the statement indicated that Israeli army forces affiliated with the Southern Command are stationed in the region in accordance with the current agreement, stressing its commitment to continue working to remove what it described as “any immediate threat.”
