An expanded Beirut meeting puts negotiations and developments in the south at the forefront of concerns

The Lebanese capital, Beirut, witnessed an extensive meeting held in one of the restaurants in the Sodeco area in honor of the Beirut events, at the invitation of a member of the “Democratic Gathering”, Representative Faisal Al-Sayegh, and sponsored by the head of the Progressive Socialist Party, Representative Taymour Jumblatt. The meeting brought together an elite group of political, ministerial, municipal, economic, social, security, judicial, union and cultural figures.

The meeting was attended, in addition to Representatives Jumblatt and Al-Sayegh, by the Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Ahmed Al-Hajjar, the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Fayez Rasamni, and the Minister of Agriculture, Nizar Hani, in addition to MPs: Bilal Abdullah, Fouad Makhzoumi, Adnan Trabelsi, and Ibrahim Mneimneh. Also participating were former MPs Mohamed Al-Amin Itani and Atef Majdalani, former Minister Mohamed Choucair, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Lebanon Makram Bou Nassar, Governor of Beirut Judge Marwan Abboud, Mayor of Beirut Municipality Ibrahim Zidane, and former Mayor Abdullah Darwish, as well as officials from the Progressive Socialist Party and civil and media figures.

At the beginning of the meeting, Al-Sayegh, on behalf of the “Democratic Gathering,” and its president, Taymour Jumblatt, conveyed their appreciation for Beirut and its inclusive role, recalling the capital’s historical milestones in the face of destruction and wars and its constant ability to rise. Al-Sayegh praised the efforts of Beirut’s representatives, and the work of the municipal council in cooperation with the governor and under the directives of the Minister of Interior, in addition to the efforts of the Ministers of Works and Agriculture.

Regarding the political issue, Al-Sayegh renewed his support for “the negotiation option as long as it leads to the liberation of the land, the return of the people, the liberation of the prisoners, and the return of the depositors’ money,” considering that Prime Minister Nawaf Salam’s visit to the south carried a clear message of adherence to sovereignty and the necessity of the state’s presence.

For his part, Interior Minister Ahmed Al-Hajjar stressed that the widespread Beirut presence reflects the role of the capital as a gathering place for all the people of the country, stressing that providing security for Beirut represents a basic duty. Al-Hajjar announced efforts to soon declare Beirut a “model city for security,” revealing the intensification of measures to address the traffic crisis and enhance cooperation with the Beirut Municipality. He also touched on the visit of the Prime Minister and Ministers to Nabatieh, stressing that it embodies the priority of the south in the government’s concerns and its keenness to support the steadfastness of its people.

In turn, MP Fouad Makhzoumi praised Minister Hajjar’s efforts in supporting the Beirut Municipality and Beiruti families, calling on the Federation of Beirut Family Associations and all those keen on the capital to “turn the page on the past” and unify efforts to advance the city. Makhzoumi thanked MP Al-Sayegh for his initiative, praising the national role of Walid Jumblatt and Taymour Jumblatt.

In the same context, former MP Muhammad Al-Amin Itani thanked Al-Sayegh for the invitation, considering that the meeting constitutes a unifying space for the people of the country, and praised Al-Sayegh’s career and his association with Kamal Jumblatt National School.
