Urgent security warning in Lebanon: Fake platforms trap citizens into the trap of financial theft

The General Directorate of Internal Security Forces issued a new warning to citizens, as part of its follow-up on cases of fraud and electronic financial fraud, and published pictures of fake websites specializing in investment and trading that were proven illegal by investigations by the Information Division.

The Directorate called on citizens to immediately stop dealing with these sites and close their accounts on them, stressing the importance of differentiating between them and the original platforms, carefully checking the names, official websites, and electronic addresses literally, and not being satisfied with merely matching the formalities or slogans.

In the same security context, the Directorate revealed that investigations are still ongoing with a number of intermediaries involved in selling and renting electronic financial accounts based on the reference of the competent judiciary. It strongly warned citizens against selling, renting, or lending their financial accounts to avoid using them in fraudulent activities that would expose their owners to legal prosecution.

To avoid falling into the trap of fraud, the competent authorities advised to download investment company applications exclusively through the official stores (App Store or Google Play), and to stay away from links sent through the WhatsApp application or social media platforms, with the need to completely verify the beneficiary party before making any financial transfer.

The Directorate concluded by emphasizing the need for anyone who has fallen victim to these fraudulent sites to take the initiative to call the Information Division’s hotline at (1788), in order to submit a complaint and complete the necessary investigative procedures.
