Rubio's immediate expulsion of Araqchi from American soil is an unprecedented diplomatic escalation

The United States of America expelled the Iranian delegation headed by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi from its territory, against the backdrop of negotiations aimed at ending the war reaching a dead end, and a deep lack of trust between the two sides amid faltering diplomatic efforts.

A report by journalist Barak Ravid on the Israeli Channel 12, based on a senior American official and an informed source, revealed that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued directives to the US mission to the United Nations on Monday evening, requiring the Iranian delegation to be informed to leave New York immediately because the purpose of their attendance at the UN General Assembly meetings had ended and they had exceeded the acceptable period of stay.

This escalatory decision came after the White House’s hopes, which were present on Monday morning, for a possible breakthrough, faded. The late hours of the afternoon of the same day showed that the negotiations had completely faltered and that neither party showed the required flexibility, despite the Qatari mediation efforts that are still continuing to communicate with the two sides regarding the proposed settlement proposal.

Following the decision, the Iranian delegation, including Minister Araghchi, headed to the airport, where they left New York on a flight to Doha at dawn on Tuesday at 1:20, at a time when an informed source indicated that Araghchi was originally planning to return to Tehran on Monday evening, and that the delegation intended to leave the city soon anyway.

In a related context, US President Donald Trump hinted at the military option during statements to reporters on Wednesday evening, commenting on the chances of reaching an agreement with the Iranian regime, where he said: “Maybe I will bomb them. Maybe I will bomb them. We have to make this decision. We will bomb them or we will reach an agreement, but the time is drawing near. It will end very soon, one way or another.”
