Member of the “Strong Lebanon” bloc, MP Nada Boustani, responded to the Minister of Energy and Water, Joe Al-Saddi’s announcement of his intention to submit a request to the Council of Ministers to cancel or suspend the 300,000 Lira fee imposed on fuel, considering that this step came late and after the escalation of parliamentary objections.
In her post on the “X” platform, Al-Bustani said: “Reversing a mistake is a virtue, even if it came late and after we raised our voice,” criticizing what she described as continuing “the same approach” in managing the energy file. She pointed out that the crisis is deeper than the value of the fee, and lies in “evading responsibility, not taking any serious steps to save what remains of the energy sector, and not even bearing real responsibility towards citizens, instead of being satisfied with populism.”
Al-Bustani called on the Minister of Energy to take practical steps, saying: “If people really care, Minister Sadi, start by canceling the additional profits for station owners and importing companies,” adding that “the citizen’s limit will not be about slogans, it will be about canceling the unjustified increases that the citizen pays for out of his pocket.”
It is noteworthy that Minister Joe Al-Saddi had announced on the “X” platform that he would request in the cabinet session held next Thursday the cancellation or suspension of the 300,000 liras fee on fuel, explaining that he had registered his objection to it from the beginning, and stressing that the priority lies in taking into account the purchasing power of citizens in light of the record high global oil prices and their local repercussions.
