Beirut – Security arrangements for the period after the end of the missions of the International Emergency Forces (UNIFIL), in addition to ways to enhance the military capabilities of the Lebanese Army, formed the focus of talks held by the Army Commander, General Rudolf Heikal, on Tuesday in Yarzeh, with German and British officials.
In this context, General Heikal received the new German Ambassador to Lebanon, Thomas Zineisen, on an introduction visit, during which he was accompanied by the military attaché, Lieutenant Colonel Kai Zimmermann. The meeting discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation between the armies of the two countries, as well as preparations related to the post-UNIFIL phase. The German Ambassador stressed the importance of supporting the Lebanese Army in the current circumstances, while the Army Commander expressed his appreciation for Berlin’s continued support for the military institution.
In a related context, the Army Commander held a meeting with the British Deputy Chief of Defense Staff, Lieutenant General Charlie Collins, and his accompanying delegation. The talks focused on the prospects for supporting the army and enhancing its operational capabilities, with a special focus on its vital role in controlling and protecting borders, in addition to discussing the entitlements of the next phase after the end of the international force’s tasks.
These diplomatic and military meetings come amid continuing regional and international consultations regarding the future of the international force’s missions in southern Lebanon, and the enormous tasks entrusted to the Lebanese army in maintaining stability and securing the borders.
