Six years after the Beirut Port explosion disaster, the Ministry of Economy and Trade intends to launch a public auction to sell scrap metal and clean the wheat barns of rubble and waste accumulated since the explosion, in a step aimed at removing the obstacles that prevent cleaning the site and benefiting from it. The Ministry stressed that the project does not in any way affect the silts themselves or the basic part of them listed on the general inventory, taking into account the privacy and symbolism of the place and respecting the memory of the victims and the feelings of their families.
The auction is conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Public Procurement Law, based on studies and surveys prepared by the National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS) in cooperation with experts from the Ministry of the Environment. According to the book of conditions, the evaluation of offers depends on presenting the highest price per ton of scrap, provided that the bidder fulfills the required technical and legal conditions.
The contract implementation period was set at 200 working days, starting from the date the contractor was notified of permission to begin in writing. The implementation of work is limited to official working hours in the port of Beirut, or outside it, on the condition of obtaining a prior written license from the port administration.
In the timetable, the Ministry set October 14, 2026, at ten in the morning, as the date for the mandatory field visit to the site. The deadline for submitting offers closes on the 19th of the same month at eleven in the afternoon, and offers will be opened on the same day at two in the afternoon.
