Many smartphone users face the crisis of full internal storage space even though their phones do not contain large amounts of photos or video clips, which opens the door to questions about the nature of the hidden data that consumes the devices’ memory.
A report published by the “Erm News” website revealed that the main reason behind this problem lies in the “temporary data” that accumulates due to the use of applications. Social media platforms, video and audio streaming applications, and Internet browsers store files, images, and video clips with the aim of speeding up the process of downloading the content when it is reused later.
The report explained that the process of deleting photos and video clips does not always contribute to freeing up storage space immediately, as these files remain for a specific period of time inside the “Recently Deleted” folder before they are permanently deleted from the system. Moreover, instant messaging applications play a prominent role in draining memory as a result of the accumulation of media, such as photos, videos, audio recordings, and documents, over the course of months or years of use.
The report touched on what is known as “system data” that appears in some phones, which are files necessary for the operation of the operating system and applications, in addition to records, temporary data, and local copies of content, the size of which constantly fluctuates according to the way the device is used.
At the conclusion of the report, the experts recommended avoiding random deletion of files, and going directly to the storage settings to identify the applications and categories that consume the most space. He stressed the need to examine temporary data, the Deleted folder, downloads folders, and messaging applications, suggesting that the actual crisis lies in the accumulation of data within the applications and not in the personal files that the user maintains directly.
