The Australian government is moving to increase its defense spending in the coming years, as part of a comprehensive plan aimed at enhancing military capabilities and confronting the rapid transformations in the global security environment.
It is planned that defense spending, according to the NATO methodology, will reach about 3% of GDP by the fiscal year 2033-2034. This calculation is not limited to direct spending by the Ministry of Defense, but extends to include government investments allocated to intelligence, infrastructure, military operations, and military housing programs.
This step represents the largest increase in Australian defense spending during peacetime, as Canberra seeks to enhance its capabilities in the areas of air and missile defence, long-range strikes, and naval capabilities.
In the same context, expectations indicate a gradual increase in direct defense budget allocations in the coming years, in parallel with pumping huge investments to modernize the armed forces and develop their combat efficiency.
