UNIFIL forces resolved the escalating controversy over talk about new “lines” and “areas” in southern Lebanon, stressing that the only reference for the United Nations is the Blue Line.
UNIFIL said in a statement on Monday evening: “There is currently a lot of talk about lines, areas and other terms when describing the situation in southern Lebanon,” stressing that “for the United Nations and UNIFIL, there is only one relevant line, which is the Blue Line.”
She explained that the Blue Line was established in 2000 as the “withdrawal line” determined by the United Nations to verify the withdrawal of the Israeli army from Lebanese territory.
It confirmed that its forces monitor the Blue Line and report developments in accordance with its mandate, stressing that any Israeli military presence north of it constitutes a violation of Security Council Resolution 1701, and UNIFIL monitors and reports it.
It also indicated that peacekeeping forces monitor and report on relevant activities carried out by non-state armed actors within the mission’s area of operations.
UNIFIL reiterated that peacekeepers coming from about 50 countries continue to fully commit to their mandate and maintain a clear field presence in various parts of southern Lebanon, through patrols, monitoring, coordination and support of partners in the humanitarian field.
She pointed out that civilians bear the brunt of the conflict, in light of the disruption to their daily lives and the state of uncertainty facing families, and the possibility of them being forced to flee amid fears for their safety.
She stressed that every effort made by peacekeepers to reduce tension, prevent misunderstanding, and keep communication channels open contributes to preventing escalation, stressing that instability is not in anyone’s interest.
UNIFIL called on all parties to renew their commitment to Security Council Resolution 1701, stop its violations, and avoid any provocative actions that would increase tension or cause more violations.
